Comenza railings at the renovated Abastos Market in Vitoria
Talking about the city and architecture in Vitoria means talking about a shared and ongoing commitment to the development of sustainable urban planning, where streets, squares and the city’s rich network of public spaces celebrate a renewed connection with nature. These are places where sustainable mobility is encouraged and healthier, more environmentally efficient urban environments are created.
This vision of a contemporary city committed to comprehensive development provides the context for the architectural transformation of Santa Bárbara Market and the work of the design team — Barcena y Zufiaur Arquitectos together with José Antonio Barroso — who faced the challenge of enriching and integrating new spaces, services and uses into the market’s urban fabric, so close to the historic centre. The aim was to attract a wider audience, revitalize the area and bring coherence to the project through a holistic approach to city-making.
The Abastos Market renovation project in Vitoria in detail
The project thus becomes a “catalyst”, a meeting place that addresses a complex set of requirements through simple and efficient strategies. These have made it possible to combine the existing with the new, the social with the commercial, large retail spaces — El Corte Inglés occupies the first floor and the BM supermarket the basement — with small businesses — Abastos Market occupies the ground floor.

Regulatory compliance at Abastos Market in Vitoria
The transformation is clearly visible on the south façade, defined by the rhythm of the new double-height portico —in steel and glass— and a spacious upper terrace dedicated to eco-stalls, crowned with vegetation. This greenery remains fully visible thanks to a delicate, minimalist perimeter finish featuring our GlassFit SV-1401 Top (top-mounted) and GlassFit SV-1402 Side (side-mounted) glass railing systems. Both are certified safety systems that comply with CTE requirements for railings in public spaces (1.6 kN). Their timeless aesthetic and precise installation minimize the visual presence of structural elements, allowing visitors to reconnect with the city and enjoy it from every perspective, without barriers.
