Curved glass railings for a prime location overlooking the Atlantic

Located in the heart of A Coruña, just a few metres from Riazor Beach, this project, designed by architect Ignacio Pedrosa Pérez of Arqnova, stands out for its corner design and its façade, where nearly 180 linear metres of Comenza curved glass railings take centre stage, combining both straight and curved sections.

Comenza’s GlassFit CC-800 glass railing clamp system was selected for this project by the developer Abeconsa Construcción. In addition, the A Coruña-based company Nova Cristalería, with 35 years of experience in the industry and responsible for installing the railings, highlighted: “Installing the GlassFit CC-800 systems, both on straight and curved sections, is very quick and convenient, as each clamp requires just a single anchor. In addition, thanks to the levelling devices, adjustments can be made once the glass has been installed. This means that each clamp can be installed in practically less than five minutes.”

Statements from the architect of the curved glass railing installation project

According to Ignacio Pedrosa, this six-storey residential building was inspired by “a hand-drawn sketch depicting a view of the street from the intersection of Alfredo Vicenti and Pondal. It is a strongly defined perspective in which the aim was to make the corner the main focal point and the building’s defining urban image.”

“To achieve this, we needed the façade to be curved, as this would allow us to enhance that effect. The railings therefore had to follow the same gesture; we could not break them up into small straight sections. They had to be curved to follow the sweep of the façade. In this respect, choosing curved glass railings was the major challenge we faced, but we are extremely satisfied with the final result.

The curved glass railing system in detail

The GlassFit CC-800 glass railing clamp system from Comenza was selected for this project due to its compatibility with curved glass.

The GlassFit CC-800 is a glass railing solution featuring stainless steel clamps, designed to provide high strength without compromising a clean and refined aesthetic. Its configuration allows for greater spacing between anchors and the use of larger glass panels, reducing the number of clamps required and optimizing the overall system cost.

The system can be adapted to projects with curved glass using specific glazing kits, expanding the possibilities for architectural design. This solution facilitates integration into façades and complex geometries while maintaining system performance and ensuring a consistent finish.

In addition, it features LEVEL 3D and SLOT 180 devices, which allow the system to be correctly levelled and aligned, compensating for any irregularities or deviations in the floor slab.

Regulatory compliance of this curved glass railing system

The CC-800 glass railing system complies with the requirements of the Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE) for private-use (0.8 kN/m) and public-use (1.6 kN/m) categories, verified through physical testing in accordance with the UNE 85-238 standard for railings. The system meets the CTE (DB SE) requirements for the strength verification of variable actions, applying a partial safety factor of 1.5.
