From the bay to an endless Mediterranean at the Catalonia Royal Ses Savines Hotel
In the peaceful fishing town of Santa Eulalia del Río, on the eastern coast of Ibiza, just a short distance from the promenade and marina, lies the four-star Catalonia Royal Ses Savines Hotel. It enjoys a privileged location with direct views of the Mediterranean and sweeping vistas extending as far as the neighbouring island of Formentera.
The site, shared with the Catalonia Ses Estaques hotel from the same chain, is located directly on the seafront beside a lush pine forest. The carefully designed landscaping gives the complex its distinctive identity, combining elements of traditional local construction, such as characteristic dry-stone walls, with a strong emphasis on outdoor living. A continuous swimming pool runs along the hotel’s entire main façade and can be accessed directly from the ground-floor suites.
The Catalonia Hotel project in detail
One of the key principles of this project, designed by architect Frauke Halberscheidt, was to make the most of its privileged location overlooking the Mediterranean, allowing the exterior to become the true focal point of the interior. This newly built hotel, inaugurated in 2017, features five floors of guest rooms topped by a rooftop dedicated to relaxation, with a swimming pool and solarium. Its stepped volume, with successive setbacks on each floor, together with large windows, helps reduce the building’s visual impact. At the same time, the choice of materials and finishes in light tones directly references the island’s traditional architecture.
The crescent-shaped building extends across the site on an east-west axis, with its main façade facing the sea. As a result, each of its 39 rooms enjoys direct views of the bay, allowing guests to experience the landscape continuously, even from their beds. This connection with the surroundings is further enhanced by providing every room with a balcony or terrace that extends the views and deliberately creates the sensation of floating above the water, much like being aboard a boat. In keeping with these design principles, glass panel railings were chosen.
Regulatory compliance at the Catalonia Hotel
The system selected for the project was Comenza’s GlassFit CC-775, which does not require a continuous profile and is suitable for use in private spaces such as hotel rooms (CTE load of 0.8 kN). Its button-type stainless steel side-mount adapters are individually anchored to the edges of the concrete floor slabs, minimizing the visual presence of the railing from the interior while emphasizing its lightness from the exterior. Developed by the company’s R&D&I department, the system features the exclusive Level 2D levelling system, which allows maximum adjustment of the glass panels for a perfect finish.
