Light, visual lightness and safety in a carefully designed comprehensive renovation
Just two kilometres north of Ibiza Town lies Talamanca Beach, facing southeast. Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay occupies a large beachfront site spanning more than 12,500 square metres.
This five-star hotel was created following an extensive renovation lasting more than two years of a former hotel built in the 1970s. The complex covers 20,000 square metres, including several restaurants and service areas, distributed across four floors and a penthouse level. Its layout and volume form an E-shaped structure opening towards the views and the bay. The building surrounds two large swimming pools and various leisure areas at entrance level.
The Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay renovation project
The renovation project, carried out by architect Álvaro Sans and the Arquilab team, seeks to achieve maximum integration between the hotel and its surroundings. For this reason, both the interiors and exteriors feature colours and materials inspired by traditional Balearic architecture, creating a relaxed and natural atmosphere. Wood is present throughout the interiors, but takes on particular importance in the rooftop and façade cladding, adding warmth, softening the building’s large exterior surfaces and creating a unified architectural identity.
The second key aspect of this comprehensive renovation is to make the most of the exceptional natural light and proximity to the bay, with views of the Mediterranean from many of the hotel’s private and public spaces. The use of floor-to-ceiling openings, complemented by large open terraces, enhances natural light and creates a greater sense of spaciousness and visual permeability.
Regulatory compliance: certified safety for private-use spaces such as Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay
In line with the project design, a glass railing system was chosen to further enhance the entry of natural light and provide uninterrupted views. The system installed, Comenza GlassFit SV-1301, features an anodized aluminium floor profile for top mounting, with a clean and continuous appearance that helps create visually lighter façades. It has also been installed in the inner courtyard, allowing soft overhead light to enter and making the interior circulation areas easier to navigate.
The carefully considered design enhances the system’s visual lightness, making it virtually disappear when viewed from inside the rooms, while strictly complying with the safety requirements of the Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE) for private and public spaces (loads of 0.8 kN and 1.6 kN).
In line with the company’s standard approach, the complete system has been tested in Comenza’s own testing laboratory before undergoing external certification by leading organizations such as Applus+ or CSTB, in accordance with the regulations applicable in each country.
