Located next to the seafront promenade and port, very close to the historic centre of Ibiza Town, is the Sir Joan Hotel Ibiza. The hotel occupies a 1,400 m² plot on the corner of two major avenues. In line with the trend towards upgrading hotels in the area without increasing the number of guests they accommodate, a former tourist apartment building has been transformed into a five-star hotel.
The original structure and overall volume —a detached, south-facing C-shaped building— have been preserved, while the interiors have been completely renovated and the exterior given a new, attractive and luminous appearance. Following the renovation, the building surrounds a swimming pool and dining areas on the ground floor, where dense vegetation around the entire perimeter enhances privacy and improves acoustic comfort.
The Sir Joan Hotel project in detail
The ground floor houses the hotel’s communal areas, including the lobby and reception, restaurants and other services. The first, second and third floors each feature twelve rooms with different orientations, all of them with one or two balconies. The penthouse is home to two suites, set within a volume recessed from the façade, with private terraces and swimming pools offering 360-degree views of both the port and the historic city centre.
This renovation project, designed by Ribas & Ribas Architects, gives the complex a distinctive, cutting-edge identity. The façade combines white and glazed volumes with open, airy spaces, blending indoor and outdoor environments and creating striking effects of transparency, reflections and light. The use of black window frames, together with their almost complete retraction on the ground floor, creates a dynamic architectural composition that emphasizes the clarity of the building’s lines.

Glass railings are the natural choice for this sophisticated façade, characterized by strongly defined surfaces and transparent planes. The system also features side mounting using a Y-shaped anodized aluminium profile that integrates seamlessly into the architectural design, playing a key role in the interplay between solid and open spaces while providing uninterrupted views.
The advanced design of this railing system, developed by the company’s R&D&I department, incorporates Comenza’s exclusive Level In internal device, which allows glazing to be carried out from inside the building without the need for special tools or equipment, ensuring safer and more cost-effective installation. The device enables the glass panels to be quickly and easily secured and levelled within a range of ±1°, contributing to the flawless finishes required for such an exclusive renovation.
